iSoft restructuring puts jobs at risk

ISoft is working on a restructuring project that could lead to almost a third of its UK front line support and delivery staff being made redundant.

Documents seen by E-Health Insider show that despite reporting a 137% increase in its full year net profits to the Australian stock market last week, the company will be merging “the application of support and service delivery into customer service” and “disparate technical teams into a unified team” in the UK.

The restructure could see iSoft reduce the headcount for the departments from 193 to 131. An iSoft staff member, whose job could be under threat, told EHI that: “Morale is poor with a lot of people feeling let down.

“We had no pay rise to save jobs, but this seems not to matter. We are being told it is being done not to save costs but to restructure the business to meet customer requirements.”

A spokesperson for iSoft confirmed the company is restructuring and that it is in a 90 day consultation period on the proposals. He said: “There is a reorganisation of the business in the UK which involves the merging of support and delivery services.

“As a consequence there is a potential for redundancies to be made and as part of the 90-day consultation period that we have to go through by law, we have had to warn staff of this.”

One of the documents seen by EHI is a series of group consultation questions that takes the form of a Q&A between iSoft staff and management. It says that if redundancies are made, they will be effective at the end of October.

ISoft is not offering “gardening leave” or voluntary redundancy. “The proposed restructure is about getting the best fit possible with the changing needs of the customer base,” it says.

“A process of allowing voluntary redundancies does not assist in this goal and risks disappointment when refused.”

The Q&A also says: “There is increasing activity from companies attempting to enter the market place and from small niche companies who are attempting to take our customer base.”

EHI has also seen a copy of an email that was sent to iSoft staff on Tuesday. It says the company expects "professional, business orientation communications" from staff and that discussing details of the restructure with third parties "would be outside of their remit."

ISoft is contracted to deliver its electronic patient record software Lorenzo to the North, Midlands and East of England under the national programme.

Despite delays to the delivery of the software, last week’s results show that its contract with CSC under NPfIT is its largest single contract, representing about 23% of group revenue in FY09.

The company also has a substantial installed base of older systems in the UK, and has recently secured deals with a number of trusts to keep these running.

Does tomorrow ever come?

27 Aug 09 11:53

With the imminent delivery of Lorenzo 1.9 at Bury followed by a massive rollout across three clusters, you would have thought they would need all the people they can get - maybe iSoft knows something that Christine Connelly doesn't! There seems to be some confusion anyway because, when announcing his profits, Mr Cohen said that Lorenzo was not going live until 2010 - and I am sure I read that the NHS thinks it's going live this year.  Lorenzo has been just around the corner for 10 years now.  Does tomorrow ever come?

Flying Pigs

Lorenzo is just around the corner, buts its a very long corner - some might call it a circle.

Just because they are putting loads of their staff on extended leave, as the first of the Trusts get to the end of the corner to start another lap; does not mean that they will ever deliver.

They are very sure they are going to deliver - blimey a pig just flew part the window.

Lorenzo - Smoke and Mirrors

"Lorenzo is just around the corner, buts its a very long corner - some might call it a circle."

.......others might call it being taken for a ride?

iSOFT has clearly moved it's focus from the UK and think it's long overdue that the DH call time on this one.

What about non-lorenzo staff?

01 Sep 09 13:39

Does this cover Lorenzo staff or all staff (is there a difference)? The article appears to point to all staff - of which there are a great many in isoft supporting "old" business in primary and secondary care, not Lorenzo. Regardless, it is sad to hear yet more skilled people will lose their jobs when record profits were announced the week before. Makes you wonder what is accurate these days!

NHS is dependent upon iSoft.

mr.acute.cio@live.co.uk

I wonder if everyone realises just how dependent the NHS Acute Trust’s are on iSoft for a wide range of systems.  We have seen iSoft “rationalise” their staffing before, through their various mergers, with the resultant loss of product and customer knowledge (and key people) from iSoft staff.  What ever happens with Lorenzo, iSoft will be supplying and supporting a wide range of legacy systems for many years to come (or at least that need will be there).  I hope that someone in CFH is asking iSoft serious questions about their future ability to support NHS IT.

UK Redundancies and Lorenzo

02 Sep 09 08:24

I'm sorry but I don't see the link between this and possible non delivery of Lorenzo.

I read it as though Gary Cohen doesn't think that all UK staff are required to support the implementation of Lorenzo.

Lorenzo will go ahead and replace existing isoft products in the UK so legacy products won't need the same level of support.

To me this reflects Gary's single track mind perfectly, he believes Lorenzo will delivery.

Why should he worry that sites need support upto and when they move off legacy products, he has a new revenue stream and he will concentrate on future business.

Lorenzo won't replace all iSoft systems

02 Sep 09 10:18

iSoft supply many NHS IT systems that Lorenzo won't be replacing at all, or in some cases, not for a good few years yet.
