Start-to-finish electronic clinical correspondence or forget the 24 hour targets

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust quickly realised that if paper was involved, it would never hit the 24 hour discharge notification target.

The trust turned to electronic correspondence specialist Medisec Software to provide the answer. Medisec integrated the trust's correspondence creation and delivery system with TalkingPoint’s digital dictation software to provide a true electronic process.

Clinicians now dictate directly into the software which attaches the recording to a patient’s file. When transcribed, the file automatically includes patient data as a letter is generated. Digital approval and electronic delivery to GPs completes the process - saving clinician and secretary time and ultimately improving patient care.

Nuance

Nuance recommends frontend voice recognition to achieve NHS reporting targets

As of March this year, NHS discharge summaries should be made available within 24 hours of a patient’s discharge.

Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, uses frontend speech recognition for efficient reporting – a method confirmed by experts. Spanish diagnostic imaging group CETIR presented an evaluation of speech recognition at the European Radiology Congress 2010, concluding that frontend VR is by far superior to any other dictation method in terms of reducing report turnaround time.

Dr Peter Gocke of the University Hospital Hamburg Eppendorf noted that: "Presenting doctors with the recognised text in front of their eyes can easily save 1-2 days of turnaround time.”

Nuance and its partners provide dedicated frontend speech recognition solutions for both general practitioners and hospitals.
